1. Computers and water do not mix. Can I realistically use a laptop to navigate on board?
Yes you can. ARCS has been successfully used in a number of
high profile open ocean races including the BT Global Challenge and the 2002
Clipper Around the World Yacht Race.
2. What are the benefits of using a laptop PC over a dedicated plotter?
The image on a laptop is much clearer and better defined,
looks like an Admiralty paper chart and is typically displayed on a larger
screen. Also, a laptop computer has a number of additional uses and is usually
less expensive than a dedicated plotter.
3. Are Raster Charts better than Vector Charts?
Both formats have their advantages, however, Admiralty Raster
Charts are the official electronic charts produced by the UKHO.
4. What do I need in order to get started in Electronic Charting?
You will require a laptop PC with a CD-ROM and a floppy disk
drive, some separate navigational software, and your selected ARCS charts.
5. How does the update service work?
You choose how frequently you wish to update your charts (
either once or four times over a 12 month period ) and then subscribe to that
level of service. Whenever you wish to update your charts, simply contact your
supplier and they will issue you with a CD containing the latest chart updates.
Insert this CD into your computer and it will automatically update your
portfolio of charts.
6. What will it cost?
For a full list of prices, consult the price list in the ARCS
Skipper brochure. It is important to note that once you have purchased an ARCS
chart, you have that chart for life. All that is necessary for safe navigation
is to ensure that you subscribe to the update service.
